Born March 14, 1910 to Daniel James and
Emma (Sullivan) Sullivan in Rochelle, Illinois; the third of three
children. Graduated from St. Patrick's Elementary School in Rochelle
and St. Thomas High School in Rockford, Illinois. Received her B.S.
Degree in Home Economics from Rockford College in Rockford, Illinois
in 1930.
Elizabeth was a cheerful, loving, caring and successful businesswoman
and mentor. She broke through the "glass ceiling" before it was a term
or even a topic of conversation. Starting with a Dietetic Internship
at St. Luke's Hospital (now Presbyterian-St Luke's) in Chicago in 1930
she showed what a woman could do in the early part of the 20th century
ending her career in December of 1971 as retiring Executive Director
(1945-52; 1964-71) of the Dairy Council of Milwaukee. Soon after wards
it became the Dairy Council of Wisconsin.
During most of her career she lived with her best friend and mother,
Emma, who died in May of 1968 in Oconomowoc, WI. Her father, Daniel,
had died in 1913; her sister, Idah Josephine Sullivan (1906-1932) and
brother, Daniel Jerome (1909-1959) also died before her.
Elizabeth moved to St. John's Tower (now St. John's on the lake) where
she brightened the lives around her and was generous to the facility
and to the residents in many ways. When she required some assistance
and moved to the Canterbury wing she provided the funds to establish a
Wellness Center for the residents in her former apartment. Now they
can get some of their medical needs taken care of without leaving
their building. This is just one example of her thoughtfulness and
generosity.
She was taken to Columbia-St. Mary's Hospital early Thanksgiving
morning, November 25, 2004 and died Saturday, November 27, 2004 at
about 1:00 AM.
In death as in life Elizabeth showed her generosity and caring; she
donated her body to the Medical College of Wisconsin.
She is survived by cousins Anne (Mark) Nagan, Bob (Sandy) Dixon and
Andy Dixon.
A memorial service to celebrate Elizabeth's life will be held in the
chapel at St. John's on the Lake on December 16, 2004 at 2:00 PM with
a reception immediately after.
Memorials can be made directly to the Cathedral of St. John the
Evangelist, St. John's on the Lake or the Medical College of
Wisconsin. |
